Lesson 12:

Lenny teaches the alphabet through “Letter of the Week”

Lenny teaches the letters through “Letter of the Week” in which the children focus on one letter of the alphabet for the whole week. Lenny starts with the letter Aa at the beginning of the year and proceeds in alphabetical order accordingly. For example, the following week they study the letter Bb, the next week they study the letter Cc, etc.

The Alternative Lesson Plan

Many children have learned successfully with this lesson.  But for those continuing to struggle, the alternative plan is as follows:

  • Teach the letters all together, instead of one at a time.

Rather than learning one letter at a time, some children benefit more by learning all the letters together as they are used in actual reading and writing contexts.  Further, given that there are twenty-six letters in the alphabet and approximately forty weeks of school, it takes more than half the school year to introduce the alphabet with this method.
